Surfers "amped" about the new surf options

Plantation Island Resort is nestled on the 553-acre island of Malolo Lai Lai, part of the Mamanuca group of islands and is just 10 miles offshore west of Nadi International Airport. The resort utilises 23 acres of tropical landscaped gardens and coconut palms and has 7km of white sandy beaches, part of which fronts the beautiful sheltered lagoon. The resort is just 10 minutes by air or 50 minutes by boat from Denarau on the main island of Viti Levu.

Plantation Island Resort has joined forces with local company Surfin’ Fiji to offer daily transfers to Fiji’s most famous surf breaks. The surf breaks, including the world famous Cloudbreak, are located only 20 minutes by boat from Plantation Island Resort. They have been the venue for numerous professional surfing competitions, including the prestigious Billabong Pro Surf and Roxy Pro Surf competitions.
Surfin’ Fiji are offering daily transfers to Namotu and Wilkes breaks for FJD$50 per person, and Cloudbreak and Desperations for FJD$70 per person. The price includes return transfers to the surf, 3 hours of surfing time and safety support. Surf board hire is also available from FJD$40 per day.
Surfing has enjoyed a new resurgence in Fiji since the July 2010 release of the Surfing Areas Decree, which gives surfers unrestricted access to any surfing area in Fiji.

Pool1

Mamanuca Islands Breaks:
  • Wilkes Passage - This fun right-hander is great for most levels of surfers & is best at mid to high tide. Like most of the breaks in the area, it works best with S - SW swell. The only access is by boat. Unfortunately, it is very exposed and prone to being blown out by the prevailing trade winds. Afternoon glass-offs, though rare, can be a truly wonderous sight as clean right hand barrels peel off mechanically into the safety of the deep channel.
  • Desperations - A classic wave that doesn't really work until its 4-5ft but just keeps getting better the bigger it gets. A left and a right with length, speed and nice hollow sections.
  • Namotu Left - A left that breaks all year round, best from October to April with lighter winds. When its under 6 ft, it will even suit longboards, but becomes very challenging over 6 ft. Namotu itself is a quality wave, but remember to kick off at the end of your ride - don’t fall into the trap of going for that final barrel section - no one gets out of it.
  • Cloudbreak - The world famous WCT location is one of the best lefts in the world. With the new laws prohibiting the exclusivity of surf breaks, you can now surf this awesome waves any day you want. This is a serious wave though, and will definitely sort the crowds out when it gets over 6ft.
  • Mini Cloudbreak  - Powerful, fast wave. The best wind direction is south-east. Best around high tide.
  • Lighthouse – South of mini-cloudbreak, near the lighthouse. Unfortunately, this one rarely breaks, but when it does, it’s for pros or kamikazes only.  Hollow, fast and powerful with a right and a left.
  • Restaurants – This is a good, fast left hand reef break for pros or kamikazes only. However, with the new laws prohibiting the exclusivity of surf breaks you can now surf this awesome waves any day you want.

Client testimonial:
We stayed at Plantation Island for 10 days in May 2009. We have 3 children aged 4, 9 & 14 at the time of our stay. The resort itself was idyllic with breathtaking views from every angle, with the beautiful aqua waters and clean gold sands of the beaches. It was a fantastic holiday for families as it catered for all of us with Kids Club and the inexpensive and reliable babysitting service, leaving loads of time for us adults to really relax while they were kept busy each day. The accommodation we had was a beach front bure and was very roomy for the 5 of us & tastefully decorated. We had the luxury of spending our afternoons lazing in the seaside hammocks sipping cold beer and reading under the gorgeous palm trees. The atmosphere at meal times was a true cultural experience with the Fijians singing while we ate traditional local foods at tables set on the sand under the light of beach torches. The resort staff were helpful, friendly and full of character. Glen had the best surf experiences most days. A friendly surf guide took him and other surfers to the best spots, where the waves were consistently in perfect form. They were early morning missions so that he was back by 10 - 11am, which left the rest of the day to relax or take the kids snorkeling etc. I would HIGHLY recommend this resort if you want a fun, relaxed holiday with kids and have your man completely thrilled after surfing perfect waves!!! A HUGE thank you to Jamie & The Perfect Wave team for providing such an awesome service and a great "easy on the pocket" getaway package. We'll definately be booking our Bali holiday next year through you. Until then... Amanda.

Offering you great-value accommodation in bungalows and a beach house, fantastic surf guiding service and 21 different surf breaks at your doorstep or a short boatride away, it offers you THE ultimate resort-style surfing holiday that you will never forget. And we didn't even mention the fishing, which is equally phenomenal.

Mentawai_Surf_christiekandu
Running strong since 1998, this surf camp has an amazingly high rate of returning guests. And no wonder why: With 20 years combined experience in surf-guiding, they know exactly where to get you at the right time. With a quota of maximum 12 surfers at a given time, you are guaranteed uncrowded waves in one of the best surfing spots in the world. And with their daily guided surfing and fishing speedboat for you to use and included in your package price, all you need to worry about is what surfboard you take and what are you going to do with the amounts of fish you catch.
Barbara, who went there in June 2009, says:
No photo, video or written article could possible prepare you for the entire WavePark experience. Being on a 27 foot single tree dug-out canoe, out in the middle of the Indian Ocean, feeling the undulating swells against the hull, and watching these pristine, glassy and EMPTY waves rolling onto shallow coral reefs, exploding into perfect barrels, sounding like both the crackling of lightening and the roar of thunder. This is something you need to personally experience to believe. ... I can honestly say, this was the BEST experience of my life, and came back a changed person.
As for the accommodation and resort facilities, what they offer is a couple of beach bungalows and a beach house. The total capacity is 14 people and the resort is family-friendly. The camp has all modern equipement that you would need - DVD player, internet connection, satellite phone, swimming pool, billiard table, digital projector... but we guarantee you that you will not be spending most of the time indoors!! In the evenings after an amazing day full of surfing, fishing or swimming, you can lay back and enjoy a refreshing drink at Mentawai's first fully stocked bar, SaBar and full-time resort photographer will make sure you will not leave the resort without taking home quality photographs that you can show your friends and look at to remember the epic times in The Mentawais.

Surfing

OK, pretty much every surfer has heard of the famous Mentawai Islands and we can confirm that it is the destination that you need to go to at least once in your lifetime. It is the amount of quality surfbreaks, their size, variety and fun that sets this area apart. Most of the surfers go there on a surf boat charter and it is indeed a great way to enjoy the most of this stunning location. What makes WavePark an equally great option is its location so near some of the great breaks, with the quotas that limit the amount of waveseekers, which makes sure that you will get a great surf, have an option to travel with your non-surfing partner or relatives and still get a great value for  your money.
The area around WavePark has plenty of different waves - fun waves for everyone (Pirates, Beng-bengs, Pitstops, Playgrounds, Burgerworld...), challenging ones (Hideaways, Spankers, Pistols, Kerinci...) and really advanced ones for someone who feels like testing him/herself (Bank Vaults, EBay, Corners, Rifles, Kandui...)!!
  • Pit Stops - This is the right off the peak at E-Bay. A playful right that can offer some cover-ups off the take-off, but mostly a high performance wave with air sections at the end. Ends in a sandy channel.
  • Burgerworld - This is a mushy pointbreak righthander. Can offer barrels at times, but usually long rippable walls with many cutback sections.
  • Hideaways - A very hollow left that can be very shallow at low tides. The waves come out of deep water, then unload on a shallow section of reef before barreling towards the channel.
  • Bank Vaults - A heavy righthander that barrels and spits. Usually larger than most spots in the area. Watch out for clean-up sets.
  • E-Bay - This is a hollow left that barrels off the take-off with a short wall down the line. A great option when a lot of swell is hitting.
  • Rifles - One of the best waves in the Mentawais. A very long righthander that wraps around the other side of the same island as No Kanduis. Rarely makeable from start to finish, but even just from section to section you can get rides up to 100 yards or longer. Nice and hollow once it’s a few feet overhead, but usually more sectiony at smaller sizes.
A happy surfer Tom, one of many repeat guests, says:

You couldn't ask for better surf guides than those at WavePark Mentawai. They'll take you where the waves are! They speak fluent Indonesian and English, their surfing abilities are incredible and they respect and ARE respected by the Mentawai people. As for the waves - I'll tell you this, I was thanking them 3 times a day through my whole trip (21 days) for giving me the best waves of my life! It is a sick experience and I am returning to have another WavePark Mentawai holiday in April of 2009! See Ya in Indo.

 Hideaways Bay

Fishing

Trevali, dog-tooth tuna, wahoo, spanish mackerel, barracuda, coral trout, yellowfin tuna, mahi mahi, rainbow runner, sharks and sailfish are all caught within a 10 minute trawl of the island. Generally speaking, the best time to trawl the reefs is early in the evening. If a speedboat is available, they leave at 17.30 with a cooler full of beers and sodas, and head out to the east coast of the island, where the fishing is best.
The crew is well-trained with the gaff hook, and the kitchen is prepared to get that fish in your gullet.  Sashimi, sushi, ceviche, barbequed, sauteed, steamed or fried. The chefs love to cook your fish the way you imagine it. Basic fishing equipment is provided, but feel free to bring your own if you are really fussy about it!

So what is included in your stay at WavePark?
  • Padang airport to hotel - return transfers for you and your surfboards in air-conditioned comfort.
  • Tour guide while in Padang on call 24/7.
  • Speedboat transfers from Padang - Mentawai and return (4 hours each way).
  • Guided surfing and fishing speedboat service all day, every day.
  • 3 meals a day, all drinks and snacks.

What do previous guests say?

Simon (October 2010):
Christie & Alice, Am sitting in Jakarta waiting for my flight home looking at the photographs from the last 22 days … What an extraordinary trip & experience! You guys & your team were just fantastic, nothing was ever too hard & in many ways, felt like 1 big happy family in the way everyone interacted with each other. Whether we were at the bar, in the boat or out the back catching waves. As an old man (40 this month!) & this being my first Mentawai Island trip, I was inspired by so many of your ‘older’ guests who are still both charging & coming back year, after year, after year. Credit to you both … you have created a paradise … from the accommodation we stayed in to the culture of your people. Hope my running shoes that I left behind are put to great use & one of the local boys beats my island running record (1st lap 25:05, 2nd lap 23:35 = total 48:41 ). My love of surfing & travel has been re-ignited … Thanks for being the catalyst. Cheers Simon

Michael (March 2008):
I have stayed at Wavepark, in August 2007 and March 2008. Both trips to Wavepark have been excellent value! There are heaps of waves in the playgrounds area which work on different winds and swell directions. There is just about always surf to be had somewhere. The winds often change during the day making it offshore at different spots. In my view Christie and his crew have the local conditions wired. There are usually 2 trips per day to wherever they think its on. Each trip is an adventure in itself, jumping in the indo style speedboat to surf new spots with a few of your mates. Plus there is the reef called Hideaways on the island which regularly produces classic lefts. We have found that with a little effort you can usually end up scoring some great indo surf to yourself. Food and accommodation on the island are pretty cool with plenty of places to rest and refuel between sessions. Once you get surfed out, you can dive, fish, watch movies, read books, go exploring, or whatever you like on the island. Each night you can have a few beers and view the surfing photos that Christie’s wife Alice has taken during the day. I highly recommend Wavepark to anyone who wants a quality Indonesian surf trip where you can enjoy some great waves and create unforgettable memories with a few mates. Michael McCall

Client testimonial for Kandooma and Hudhuran Fushi resorts in the Maldives

Hi Rhonda, I just wanted to send a quick e-mail to say a big thank you for all your help in organising my recent honeymoon. Your help and input was much appreciated and no doubt had a big influence on us having an absolutely amazing time. The Maldives....amazing place!!!

Everything went really well, from the pick-ups and transfers through to the nice little swell running while we were at Hudhuran Fushi. We were more than happy at Kandooma, but Hudhuran Fushi really blew us away. It is such a beautiful place and the overwater villas were amazing. Truly a memorable experience.

Thank you once again. I will definitely be in touch to arrange the next trip through you, though the next one will likely be a boys trip. Open to suggestions...

PNG Explorer - discovering new surf breaks by day.

PNG Surfaris – PNG Explorer

Most surfers have heard of Papua New Guinea (profile, blog and video) as a surf destination and many have experienced the pristine surf conditions of this wild country. But with so many remote islands and reefs around PNG, its surf potential has barely been touched. It is only now with the purpose-built surf charter boat, PNG Explorer, run by PNG Surfaris, that surfers are able to access areas that have never before been surfed.

After a recent trip to PNG and catching up with the owners, Andrew and Jude, and checking out the new boat, the first word that sprang to mind was “impressive”. After many, many months of hard work and many thousands of dollars refitting their new vessel, the boat set sail on its maiden surf voyage in October 2010. Since then Andrew quotes “We are discovering new breaks every trip and so far we have discovered over 30 new breaks! Someone needs to come up with a system for naming new waves as I have run out of names for all the waves we have found over the last few months!” Andrew and Jude are very passionate about their new boat and the trip they offer, and rightly so, as they are forging new ground in surf travel and writing their names in the history books.

Don’t just take our word for it, check out some of these awesome shots for what is considered to be “The Best Surf Charter in the South Pacific”

History - Andrew and Jude pioneered the St Matthias and Manus Island groups with their first boat, the MV Exocoetus or ‘Exo’. The past three years have seen Exo, with Andrew at the helm, carry 260 guests safely around the islands of New Ireland. Prior to the tourism charters, the duo were well known from trading around the islands. It was during this time that Andrew began to surf the waves. With every surf the locals amazed as Andrew rode the “si brukim” (breaking sea) standing on foam and fibreglass. This was obvious by the crowds that gathered to watch, and metered by their reaction as he disappeared into the wave and charged out the other end. That was their first ‘barrel’ on this island and Andrews’ right to name the break.

Three years of surf charter operations have enabled PNG Surfaris to document the consistency of the waves, and discover many more. They were the first to do this in many of the islands, and are keen to share this place with other surfers; whilst up-keeping the relative secrecy of what is one of the world’s last untapped surfing resources.
The surfing season in New Ireland Province is a relatively short season from October to April. This is taking advantage of the Northern Hemisphere swells coming from the northwest to northeast directions. During this period the wind is predominately from the N/NW. The surf generally ranges from 3-4ft; bigger swells see it at 5-6ft.

Surf Management Plans
- The Niu Ailan Surfriders Alliance (NASA) is an affiliated member of the Surfing Association of PNG. The PNG Surf Management Plan structure, and in particular the Niu Ailan Surfriders Alliance Management Plans have been specifically developed with the primary goal of limiting surfer numbers, and limiting exploitation so that the PNG surf experience remains unique and memorable for those fortunate enough to experience it.

Our previous clients' testimonials:

I have just arrived home from your last trip out to the panitans. We had great waves, Napalms was amazing, and i'd love to come back and get illusions good (it was onshore, but still heaps fun) the crew were great, the food was really good. Ollie was super aware and responsive to everything that was going on throughout the trip, he was an awesome host. it was amazing how the whole crew just slipped around the boat, doing so much, making everything run so smoothly, but you would hardly notice them. i can only imagine that it would be hard to keep that level of service throughout the season, but with something like 4 months down they seem to be taking it all in their stride. an awesome trip, I had a great time. thanks
Pete

==

Our first sight of the waves was an over head glassy barrel funnelling down the reef at Napalms. The wave was greeted with collective hoots onboard as we all scrambled to get amongst it. The rest of the day and the next were spent scoring perfect head high and head high plus barrelling lefts at Napalms and Tettes. By the end of day two we had all donated both skin and fibreglass to the Napalms reef but had the smiles of surf stoked men. The next 4 or five days are somewhat of a blur as the trip went from great to insane. We were greeted with wet season like conditions which meant the rights were on. Illusions was pumping and the boys made the most of it clocking up 6 to 8 hrs in the water. One day blurred into the next and we continued to score perfect, uncrowded, overhead waves. A brief stint at Apocalypse managed to impress all the boys as we watched a couple of pros pulling into stand up barrels on waves that have to be seen to be believed. As the swell dropped and the trades started to blow four ship wrecked Javanese locals emerged from the jungle and swam out to the boat. These guys hadn't eaten for 5 days and had been wondering through the jungle looking for help. After giving them a feed and some dry clothes we motored to the main land to drop them off and managed to surf a few waves in a magical bay called Angels before heading back to Panaitan Island. The next couple of days were small and we spent time at the top of the main bay surfing Croc n Rolls. Fun lefts and rights were had by all as we waited for the swell to hit in hope One Palm would turn it on. We woke on our second to last day with swell lines rolling through so we pulled the pick and headed for One Palm. The sight that greeted us as we pulled up was one I won’t forget any time soon. Perfect 3-4 ft barrels pouring down the reef with such perfection it was hard to believe. What a way to finish off a trip!! As we motored back to port we were met with an impressive lightning storm that lite up this incredibly beautiful place. As the final beers were drunk, the tunes cranked and the smiles on the boys faces said it all. A huge thanks to Siby, Manto, Cooky and Olly for a brilliant trip. I hope to see you again soon fellas!
Chris

We arrived at Panaitan and weather was calm, we had a good trip down with calm winds the whole way down. The trip started off with some 3 foot, super clean napalm. It was a great intro for the boys. The next day we were expecting a large swell and the boys were keen for some bigger napalm which we scored.... solid 5 foot, heavy barrels, the same day we surfed 5 foot one palm, heaps of barrels for everybody. Next 2 days we surfed napalms and tetes, clean 3 foot conditions. The winds were good for the rights as well, and we surfed illusions 3 to 4 foot clean and doing its thing. Apocalypse was 6 foot solid, heavy barrels, but only broke briefly due to a wind change. The rest of the trip saw us doing the rounds of the bay with great head and and half high waves at napalms in the mornings then across to the rights when the tide dropped for great long walls at illusions. We ended up with 2 great surfs at Apocalypse, one was 4 foot and super fun. The next was 6 foot plus grinding barrels which were as wide as they were high.....very impressive! This was a ten day trip and saw the boys score great clean waves everyday.

Hey Jamie, Sorry for the very late reply, has taken me till today to get all the photos off the boys after our Paniatan Island trip in July. We scored awesome waves throughout the trip and I’ve attached a few pictures. I cannot speak too highly of Olly and all the boys on "Just Dreaming", as they were great and made sure that we were all very well looked after. This included travel time, great food, good beer and fucking unbelievable waves. We scored One palm about 4-6 foot a couple of days with only a few of us out. Also scored 3-4 foot Napalms with just us boys out for about 4 hours. Its October now and we are still pumped about the trip. Thanks for all your help in organizing the trip, made life a hell of a lot easier. Trying to sort out attaching photos.. my computer keeps fucking up so I’ll try and get them to you eventually... Cheers again mate
